fingerprint class

every few weeks, we have a unit that has some kind of “experiment” in it.  last time, it was making a rainbow in the bathroom (using a flashlight, cup of water, and a mirror) and the kids go nuts for these special days.  a few days ago, the experiment was dusting for fingerprints.  they were so excited to do this, and couldn’t wait for monday to come.  well right before their class, i tried it out and it didn’t work!  it said to put lotion on your hands, touch the mirror, them brush powder over the finger print, next, put tape on the print, and transfer it to a piece of black paper. FAIL! so i made up a new thing really fast.  This was for my grade 2 students in “let’s go 4”

1. Make an “ink pad” on your scrap paper.  Just make a square, and fill it in really dark with pencil.

2. Rub your finger in the “ink”.

3.  Put a piece of tape on your finger.  Take the tape off, and stick it to a piece of white paper.

4. Repeat for the rest of your fingers.

After we did it, we looked up types of fingerprints on the internet, which they found fascinating, and looked at the differences between our finger prints. SUCCESS!  I could hear them talking to each other in Korea “waa how fun is THIS?”  ”it’s super fun” yay^^

*james saw in the baby name book that “diego” is a variation of james, so sometimes he changes his name to Diego.
